Cervical Cancer Vaccine Programme

Is the Cervical Cancer Vaccine right for me?
This is a very important question to ask, and your cervical cancer treatment and prevention is best discussed with a consultant gynaecologist and expert in cervical abnormalities.

Mr Clive Aldrich is a consultant gynaecologist who is very experienced in diagnosing and treating cervical abnormalities. At The Cervical Vaccine Clinic, we encourage all women aged between 16 and 26 who are sexually active to consult Mr Aldrich to see if the vaccine is right for them. Younger patients will usually be seen by an experienced GP from the practice.

Your Initial Consultation At The Cervical Vaccine Clinic
At The Cervical Vaccine Clinic, women aged between 16 and 26 will usually have an initial 20 minute consultation with Mr Aldrich, where you can discuss issues relating to the HPV vaccine and cancer of the cervix, and also review any related gynaecological problems or concerns you may have.

If you are sexually active, you will also be offered an HPV test. Should any further investigation be decided on, Mr Aldrich may refer you to one of his other specialist clinics.

Your HPV test
If you are sexually active, an experienced nurse will then conduct an HPV test (similar to a smear) to check if you already have any of the four HPV subtypes covered by the vaccine. (Women who are not sexually active will not require this test, and will receive the first vaccine from a nurse).

HPV Testing Results at The Cervical Vaccine Clinic
Testing for HPV is offered to all sexually active patients and results are available within 1 week. If you test negative, you can receive the vaccine, which will protect with maximum effectiveness.

If you test positive for up to three strains of HPV, the vaccine will still be effective, but you will also require closer follow up checks.

If you test positive for all of the four HPV strains, the vaccine is unlikely to be effective. You will be able to discuss the implications of this with Mr Aldrich or one of the four highly experienced GPs at The Cervical Vaccine Clinic.

Your Child's Initial Consultation at The Cervical Vaccine Clinic
Young people may be embarrassed to talk about their sexual health, but The Cervical Vaccine Clinic offers professional service combined with a gentle and understanding approach.

Young people aged between 9 and 16 and who are not sexually active will have their initial consultation with one of the four highly experienced GPs at The Cervical Vaccine Clinic, in the presence of their parents. Young people who request to discuss their sexual health without their parents present may do so.

The GP will explain in clear terms what the vaccination is for and what is involved at an appropriate level, so your child fully understands without being worried or concerned.

All vaccinations for young people will then usually be administered by one of the clinics experienced nurses, which young people generally find more reassuring.

Your Vaccination Programme at The Cervical Vaccine Clinic
If the HPV test shows that the cervical cancer vaccination is suitable for you, the first vaccination will be given by a nurse during a brief five to ten minute session.

Your Gardasil® vaccine will be given as a standard intramuscular injection, either in your upper arm or in your thigh.

Like most injections, the Gardasil vaccine injection may cause slight swelling or soreness around the entry point, but this will soon fade.

You then return for two further vaccinations taking just five to ten minutes each, the first 2 months later, the second six months later. These vaccinations will be administered by a nurse, who will also issue you with a certificate of vaccination on your last visit.

Therefore, as a sexually active woman, you will visit the Cervical Vaccine Clinic four times; once for your initial consultation and HPV test, and then three times for three separate vaccination injections.

Women and girls who are not sexually active and who receive the vaccine directly after their consultation will need to return a further two times to complete the vaccination programme.

Your Vaccination Fees at The Cervical Vaccine Clinic
Your initial consultation with either Mr Aldrich or a GP costs just £197. This includes either your first vaccination or if you decide to have one, an HPV test.

Subsequent appointments and vaccinations cost just £120 each. A deposit of £50 is required for each visit, and payment can be made by credit card or cheque.
